Most of us use the word “anointing” incorrectly. It actually means “a smearing”. 

When most people speak of the “anointing”, they are referring to the presence of God’s Holy Spirit. 

Our anointings are very individual and specific.  They are God’s “marking” or “smearing” on our lives, like the “smearing” on the head of a sheep.  And, because anointings are specific, this means that we have been “marked” by God for specific purposes.  (Yes, we can have more than one anointing/marking.)

God told the prophet Elijah to anoint 3 different people: 2 kings & 1 prophet.  In fact, God said to anoint specific persons for each kingdom over which they would rule, and He told Elijah to anoint Elisha to be prophet “in his place”, meaning that Elisha would eventually replace him in ministry. 

This demonstrates the specificity of anointings/markings on the life of each child of God.  When you are doing what God has anointed you to do, His Holy Spirit will be attracted to that anointing, and will empower you as you perform that, for which you are anointed – marked.
